Story Excerpt:
“You’re breathtaking,” Ramon whispered as he leaned down and
took her lips in a soul searing kiss.
Biddy was left trembling and breathless when he finally
pulled away from her.
“Don’t move,” he said with a smile and jumped down off the
porch.
Biddy watched curiously trying to figure out what he was
doing. He headed back to his truck and leaned inside. He fiddled around for a
second and then the night air was filled with the crooning voice of Dean
Martin. Ramon walked back up onto the porch. He took her right hand in his left
and wrapped his right arm around her waist. He slowly and deliberately drew her
into his body.
“Dance with me,” he said.
“I-I don’t know how.” Biddy stammered as her cheeks flamed
yet again as she was reminded of her shortcomings.
He leaned over and kissed her softly on the lips. “Just
follow me.” He murmured gently and started leading her into a slow simple dance
his mother had taught him.
Biddy relaxed in his arms and let him move her with a grace
and confidence that amazed her. It wasn’t long before her head was resting in
the middle of his chest and his cheek was resting on the top of her head. She
wasn’t sure how long they danced and she didn’t care. She could’ve stayed just
as they were until the end of the world. She had never felt so safe, so
cherished, and special.

“Why are we going to the café?” Sam asked Betty as she
turned into the darkened driveway of the café.
“I’ve got to check on a couple of things for the breakfast
rush,” she said easily as she killed the engine of the Cadillac. She leaned
over and kissed her husband on the cheek and smiled. “I won’t be but a minute.”
She got out of the car and headed into the café.
Almost ten minutes
later….
Sam let out a frustrated breath. Betty sure was taking her
time.
“Granddad, why don’t you wait here? Lynn and I will go and
see what’s taking Granny so long. She might just need some help,” Jules said as
she pulled a confused Lynn out of the back seat of the big town car.
“Thanks honey but please hurry. I’m tired and I’d like to
get some sleep,” he said with a heavy sigh as he leaned his head back against
the head rest of the seat.
“Sure thing,” Jules said with a smile as she grabbed Lynn’s
hand and practically dragged her into the café.
Jules didn’t even stop to check and see if her granny was in
the office. She went straight through and out the back door. She took a second
to look around and finally spotted her granny. She was a little ways up the
trail to Biddy’s cabin and peeking around a large oak tree. She pulled Lynn
with her and they jogged quietly to the tree
“What are we doing?” Lynn asked with a huff of frustration.
“Shhhhh,” Jules instructed and she walked up behind her granny.
“Well?” Jules asked just loud enough for Betty to hear her.
Betty gasped and whirled around clutching her bosom in
shock.
“Sake’s alive child! You took ten years off my life. I
taught you better than to sneak around,” Betty whispered harshly.
Jules snorted. “This coming from the woman spying on her
friend,” Jules said with a roll of her eyes.
“I am not spying. I am simply checking to make sure
everything is okay,” Betty said with an indignant sniff.
“Fine, whatever. How’s it going?” she asked.
Betty’s teeth gleamed in the moonlight as she smiled. “See
for yourself,” she whispered and peeked back around the tree.
Jules eagerly pulled Lynn with her and they peered around
Betty and the tree. All three women let out equal awes at the sight that greeted their spying eyes. In the light
given off by the trucks headlight, Ramon and Biddy was holding each other close
as they moved around the front porch to Dean Martin.
“Is that Biddy?” Lynn asked in a whisper.
Jules grinned down at her and just nodded her head. Lynn
smiled as well and looked back at the romantic scene playing out in front of
her. It was like watching a great romance movie but for real. The three women
let out deep sighs of happiness and contentment at the same time.
“What in the world are you three doing?” Sam’s harsh voice
broke through the magic of the moment…at least for the three spies.
The three women whirled around and gave him three
simultaneous “Shhhh’s” with their
pointer fingers in front of their lips and glaring at him.
“What are y’all lookin’ at?” Sam whispered as he too moved
to the tree.
He looked around the tree and over the top of his wife’s
head. He chuckled at what the three were so enchanted with.
“Alright you three peeping toms let’s go. Back to the car,” Sam
said in a firm whisper as he started herding the three delinquents back to the
car.
“But Sam…” Betty said with a pleading pout.
“No ‘buts.’ Let’s go. Quick march. Hustle, hustle, hustle,” he
said quietly as he shooed the women away. All three of them were groaning in
protest and glaring at him.
Sam chuckled at their antics as he watched them walk
reluctantly back into the café. He peaked back over his shoulder and his
expression softened as he watched the young couple on the porch.
“Atta boy, Ramon,” he whispered into the night and turned to
follow after his three miscreants.
